Why does chat say it's retrying?

Quick answer

A banner appears when messages aren’t syncing normally. Messages you’ve sent are saved on your device and delivered once things recover — they aren’t lost.

Team chat sometimes shows an orange banner at the top of a conversation when messages are taking longer than usual to send or receive. There are two kinds, and they mean different things.

“Team Assist keeps retrying”

The most common banner reads:

“Some messages aren’t syncing yet. Team Assist keeps retrying — if this persists, re-enter your invite code to reconnect this device.”

Sometimes a “Retry needed — tap to retry” banner appears instead, with a short note about what’s waiting.

What it doesn’t mean: it doesn’t mean your messages are gone. Anything you’ve sent is saved on your device and delivered once things recover — that’s true even if you close the app or restart your iPhone; pending messages are still there when you come back.

What to do: usually nothing. Give it a moment and it clears on its own. Tapping a “tap to retry” banner (or the refresh button, or pulling down on the conversation) prompts another attempt right away. Checking that you have a working internet connection is worth doing first — the banner can’t tell the difference between a problem at our end and your phone being on a hotel Wi-Fi that hasn’t finished connecting.

“This device is no longer connected”

The second banner is different:

“This device is no longer connected for messaging. Re-enter your invite code to reconnect.”

This one won’t clear on its own, because the connection itself needs re-establishing rather than retrying. Reconnect the same way you first connected: enter the original invite code and your phone number again. If you no longer have the code, ask the coach to resend the invite — it’s the same code.

If it won’t go away

If the retrying banner stays up for a long stretch on a good connection, that’s worth reporting with rough times, which makes it much easier to trace.

The “Athlete sync needs attention” strip

Separate from chat: when the app cannot send an update to a connected athlete or parent, a small orange Athlete sync needs attention strip appears at the top of the screen for a few seconds and fades on its own. It never blocks the screen — keep working, the app retries in the background. (Earlier builds showed this as a pop-up titled “Android Sync Needs Attention” that had to be dismissed; that pop-up is gone.)
